Huddersfield Giants claimed just their second win of the season as they beat Warrington Wolves 24-16 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Here’s a look at a few talking points.
Huddersfield a threat for anyone
After pushing Wigan Warriors all the way last week before losing out in the final moments, Huddersfield travelled to Warrington with confidence and in truth, they never looked like losing in Cheshire.
Tui Lolohea was the star of the show as he broke away to create the first try of the game, which was scored by Jacob Gagai. George Flanagan carved out Huddersfield’s second which was finished by Jake Bibby in the corner before Marc Sneyd gave Warrington something to take into the break.
Taane Milne and Gagai got over in the second half, too, as Huddersfield finally did enough to put a team away despite the late Warrington fightback. It’s just the second win they’ve claimed all year but they have the opportunity to build on it now with key games against Catalans Dragons and Castleford Tigers coming up on the schedule.
Warrington Wolves woes continue
Warrington were second best for huge periods of the clash as Sam Burgess’ side struggled for confidence, knowhow and quality. The likes of Paul Vaughan and Marc Sneyd caught the eye as they always do, but they were overpowered through the middle for a majority of the contest to lose their third game in a row.
What will come as a huge frustration for the head coach is that Warrington only seemed to turn it on with 20 minutes left, when they were 24-6 down.
Wire have now lost five of their last six games and they face another tricky home game next week when they host Hull FC. With fans starting to voice their frustrations and with form deserting them, Warrington simply need to bounce back next week.
The best and worst of Lolohea
Huddersfield needed Lolohea to step up in the absence of Clune and he certainly did as he turned on the class at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. It was his interception that led to Gagai’s first try, with Lolohea breaking down the field before finding the winger on his inside shoulder.
The stand-off created Taane Milne’s effort and it was his 40/20 that led to Gagai’s second in the second half. However, defensively, Lolohea showed himself up on a couple of occasions particularly in the build-up to Sneyd’s try.
Huddersfield injuries bite
It’s been a familiar story for the Giants, but injuries continue to strike for Luke Robinson’s side. Huddersfield lost Adam Clune for the season in the week due to a hamstring injury and Oliver Wilson was a notable absentee when the team news came through at 1.30pm.
Unfortunately just three minutes into the contest Sam Hewitt was forced off the field with a head knock and subsequently failed a HIA leaving the Giants a man down in the pack for much of the contest. Ashton Golding left the action in the second half with a neck issue, too.
Gouging accusation made
Just before the break, play was stopped as Jordy Crowther made an accusation of gouging. The incident came as the Warrington Wolves man put a tackle on Taane Milne, with the Fiji international being the man accused.
It was looked at by the video referee but the footage was hard to decipher. It was placed on report and it will be looked at by the match review panel on Monday morning. If found guilty, Milne could be looking at a lengthy ban.
