A fundraiser has been launched in support of former Super League hooker Micky Higham, following his cancer diagnosis, with a walk planned for next month.
Higham, who was diagnosed with stage four widespread metastasized cancer in June, is a stalwart of the game, making more than 450 appearances across his nearly 20-year career at four clubs: Leigh, St Helens, Wigan Warriors, and Warrington Wolves.
The 44-year-old was first diagnosed with Stage 3 melanoma back in November 2022, after finding a lump under his arm just a few months earlier.
However, after surgery and immunotherapy, he was given the all-clear and was told he was cancer-free.
Unfortunately, in March 2025, he discovered a lump in his lower back, with scans revealing a 10cm growth, and news of the cancer spreading to other muscles meant a Stage 4 widespread metastasized cancer diagnosis.
After being told last week that he is unable to take part in a UK-based clinical trial, he is now fundraising to be able to access similar European medical trials.
Super League man fighting cancer set for fundraising drive
A fundraising community walk on Sunday 24th August is the first event to be held, with Higham aiming to raise funds for not only himself and his family, but also for vital cancer research.
On a JustGiving page set up by Emma Worrall, it reads: “This page is a rallying call to everyone who knows Micky, has cheered him on, or simply believes in the power of community and hope. Every donation helps ease the burden and fuels the fight, not just for Micky, but for everyone affected by cancer.
“We’re calling on the people of Leigh, and beyond, to come together, show support, and walk to fight against cancer. Let’s unite for Micky, for his family, and for the vital cause of cancer research and treatment.
“Let’s start by walking with Micky. Let’s fight with him. Let’s help beat cancer together.”
At the time of writing, more than £26,000 has already been raised by the rugby league community, who always come together in someone’s time of need.
