Former Wigan Warriors and Huddersfield Giants man speaks for the first time following move to Championship side

Ex-Huddersfield Giants and Wigan Warriors man, Jake Bibby, has spoken for the first time since his move to Championship side Oldham RLFC.

Bibby, who joins the second tier side on a one-year deal with an option for a second, revealed that he rejected interested from Super League sides to join his new team, and has one main goal that he wants to achieve.

The 195-time Super League player wants to see his new side in the top flight, and believes the club has a real possibility to do so after narrowly missing out in this season’s applications.

In his first interview since joining the club, 31-year-old Bibby said to Oldham club media that he can’t wait to try and help the Roughyeds get back to where he believes they deserve to be.

He said: “It’s an ambitious club. Obviously, they fell short of Super League for next next year, but I think it’s put them in good stead and sets us up for a good pre-season and Championship season and then hopefully get that goal that pushes us into Super League.”

Asked what the move meant for him, he said: “It’s good for me, I’ve still got Super League ambitions and I can see Oldham doing that.

“I’d like to think that I’ve been there, done a bit, but I just think overall for myself and for the club, I think it’s where it’s should be. I’ve seen the results of the club and where they’re going, it’s only going up and up.

“I think this is their best finish for so many years, they fell short with not getting to the [Championship] final, but I feel like they’ve got some good quality players and good quality coaching and I think they should be there [in Super League].”

Linking up with ex-Salford teammates made for another reason for Bibby to sign, and he believes that he will be able to reignite his career, after some disappointing seasons at the Giants.

He said: “I know a few of the lads like Gil [Dudson], [Ryan] Lannon, and I think with my life at the minute, like you said I had Super League offers but there was something more about wanting to help the club and I think you probably get a bit more out of that.

“I feel like I wasn’t playing my greatest rugby, you could have said maybe at Huddersfield over the past couple of years, but I feel like I was getting back on my horse and I feel like I’ve got something else to prove and I feel like when you’ve got a goal of something bigger than the club itself, it’s going to make the club better, that Super League goal, I want to be a part of that.

Reflecting further on his time at the Accu Stadium, he said: “It’s been a challenging couple of years for Huddersfield. I think they were riddled with injuries which didn’t help, I didn’t think they showed their true team, the worth of the team.

“I think that made it hard for some players to get performing the way they should, and I feel like I have been there and done that, I’m not really a big-headed person. If you were to say to me, ‘what type of player are you?’ I’m not going to say I’m a big flamboyant player. I’m not the most flamboyant player out there. I’m hard-working and I feel like I can bring that to this team and hopefully graft our way back there.

Bibby’s goals for the upcoming season are clear. Whilst silverware would be a welcome addition at the club, to claim top flight promotion and complete the great work the side have done over the past two and a half years means more than anything.

“I’m still a Super League player in my mind. I feel like there’s Super League quality players in this club and coaching staff and throughout the club itself. So, I feel like that’s an end goal for the club as it is.”
