A rugby league journeyman who can count St Helens, Hull FC, Leigh, and Bradford Bulls among his former clubs has signed for a new club for 2026.
Matty Dawson-Jones, who many will remember as Matty Dawson, has made the cross-Championship switch from Sheffield Eagles to Hunslet on a one-year deal.
Debuting with Huddersfield Giants in 2012, Dawson-Jones made his name at St Helens where he would make 50 appearances across three seasons.
He’d score 16 tries during that period with a Grand Final win coming in his first year at the club, though he didn’t play in the game at Old Trafford.
The outside back joined Leigh after his time with St Helens, making 42 appearances before a short-lived switch to Hull FC, and then Bradford.
He’s played the last three seasons with Sheffield Eagles, scoring an impressive 46 tries in 78 games but the 35-year-old has now made the move to join West Yorkshire club Hunslet.
Former St Helens back Matty Dawson-Jones signs for new club
Announcing Dawson-Jones as a new recruit, Hunslet noted his time as a Super League winner with St Helens and head coach Kyle Trout hailed that sort of experience.
On his new recruit, Trout said: “Matty is a great acquisition for us as a Club. He is a quality player with a lot of experience at the highest level of the game.
“We look forward to seeing him bring his own touches to our environment and showcasing his capabilities on the field.”
Dawson-Jones said: “I am really happy to have signed for the Club for the upcoming 2026 season and i can’t wait to get started.
“I am going into an environment that’s going through big changes and i am excited to be part of that.
“It’s a young staff with some fresh ideas and lots of hunger and energy for the game and i’m hoping that with my experience i can help as much as i can on and off the field.”
