Former Leeds Rhinos and St Helens ace retires aged 34

Ex-Super League and Leeds Rhinos powerhouse, Konrad Hurrell, has announced his decision to retire from the sport, putting an end to a 15-year career.

Nicknamed “The Hurrellcane”, the Tongan international began his career with the New Zealand Warriors and would go on to play 17 times in his first season, scoring 12 tries.

After four and a half seasons at the Wahs, he would move to Gold Coast Titans part way through 2016, and it was there he would make 45 appearances, dotting down 14 times.

Departing the NRL after 2018, he would join Leeds Rhinos for three seasons, and would be part of their Challenge Cup winning squad in 2020.

Joining St Helens for 2022, his first season in the Red Vee would end with him winning a Grand Final over his former side, and to rub further salt into the wound he managed to get on the scoresheet that day.

He would stay at Saints for a further three years, however the 2025 campaign would prove to be tumultuous for the centre, with injury limiting him to just one game at first team level.

He spent time on loan at Swinton, Halifax and Bradford in the Championship, before he would depart at the season’s end to join French side Lezignan.

It is there he has played the final season of his career, and he has helped them to a sixth placed finish in the French Elite One competition.

With that season now coming to and end, Hurrell has revealed he will hang up the boots officially, doing so by a post on social media.

Speaking via Instagram, he said: “I appreciate your love and welcome for me and my little family in the Lezignan family and this great club. Loving French XIII rugby. To the boys and coaches, sorry my French sucks, I’ll be better next time 😂 Love you all 😘”

The 13-time Tongan international also posted a story with the caption: “Yea time to hang up the boots” – confirming his decision.
