In the midst of Shaun Wane resigning as England head coach, the search for a replacement is on with a quartet of Super League coaches emerging as favourites.
Despite his post-Headingley insistence that he ‘knew’ he was the man to lead England into the upcoming World Cup, Shaun Wane stepped down just 67 days after that third and final Ashes Test defeat.
It leaves the RFL less than nine months to sort a new coach before the World Cup, although the coach will obviously have to be implemented long before England’s tournament opener against Tonga on October 17th.
Fans have already had their say on who should be appointed with plenty of Super League names floated, although the likes of Willie Peters, Paul Rowley and Daryl Powell were among the most commonly called for.
Now, MyBettingSites.co.uk have launched a list of odds for who actually will be the next England coach with two of those aforementioned three near the top of the market.
Super League winner favourite for England job
It’s Hull KR’s treble-winning coach Willie Peters who is the 2/1 favourite with the Australian fresh off the back of working for the Kangaroos as an assistant coach in the Ashes, with former KR man Paul Cooke the latest to tip him up for the job.
With the RFL confirming that the likelihood is that the England gig will become a part-time role, it opens the job up to those already in coaching positions and that is reflected in the market with just one name in the market not currently coaching.
That name is James Graham, a man who has never coached, but was touted by Australian media back in November as a possible assistant alongside Sam Burgess, who is priced at 4/1 as the second-favourite in the market.
Paul Rowley (6/1) and Matt Peet (8/1) round out the top four with all four hailing from Super League before Brisbane Broncos’ coach Michael Maguire, who has previously coached Wigan Warriors, New Zealand and New South Wales, is made a 14/1 shot.
Former England boss Wayne Bennett is priced at 30/1 alongside ex-Leeds man Brian McDermott, who is an assistant in the NRL, much like Paul Wellens, who is a 25/1 chance.
