Rugby league fans react to best coach in Super League comment made by Sky Sports pundit

Leeds Rhinos

Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin is known to make strong statements, and he’s a figure that gets rugby league fans talking.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Rugby League Verdict, he declared an opinion that has fans commenting online.

That remark was: “I think, in Willie Peters, they’ve got the best coach in Super League by some stretch.”

Whilst Peters has elevated his Hull KR side to new heights and talk of a potential move to the NRL, many believe that he needs to win more silverware before being considered as the league’s best coach.

However, compared to where Rovers were when he took over, it’s been a huge transformation, and he’s been an integral part of that.

Many fans have raised Matt Peet as the main contender for the title of best coach, with many citing his consistency since taking over of winning silverware.

Here’s what rugby league fans from our Facebook page and across social media think about Jon Wilkin’s statement.

Rugby league fans react to Jon Wilkin’s comments on who’s the best coach in Super League

Antony Isherwood: You can be consistent all season, all you want, but when it counts in the playoffs and the Grand Final, will Hull KR go all the way and win it? All it takes is one loss against Wigan, for example, who are only two points behind in the table.

Alan Levorato: Back to the statement, Matty Peet is by far a better coach than Peters.

Martin Atkinson: Maybe Jon is going by this season, judging by his comments, but time will tell. For me, it is Matt Peet all the way, going by what he has achieved at Wigan. Whoever wins the Super League title and Grand Final this year, Wigan will be there to spoil the party.

Beryl McConville: Matty Peet is THE best coach in Super League.

Kieran Brannigan: He’s a great coach, but they’ve only won one trophy. Peet is three trophies away from being the most successful coach in Super League history.

Martyn Joel: He’s only lighting fuel for the fire. Wigan coaching staff and players will take that with a pinch of salt and reply on the field.

David Oxman: It’s a results business, and he’s certainly done that. Great coach.

Dave Kenyon: He is doing a great job, hope it continues for him, as Wigan need tough competition.

Garry Doyle: In less than three years, he’s turned the team around massively.

Ste Lor: He’s certainly up there, but with regards to turning a club around, Brad Arthur at Leeds has done a great job.

Third season, first he steadied things, then he improved things, now he’s excelled. Wigan have had decades of success, a well oiled machine that turns out quality pkayers year in year out. A backroom staff that have managed superbly to kept Wigan at or near the pinnacle. That Wigan have enjoyed success under Matt Peet is to be expected. What Willie Peters has done is remarkable, from an ok team, to a team on the fringes of success, to a real hard fighting force looking to excel, playing with confidence. That’s bound to attract attention in the NRL.
