Rugby League fans have debated whether Super League should relaunch a Yorkshire versus Lancashire series, akin to State of Origin.
Branded as the ‘War of the Roses’, the last games between the traditional counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire was played in 2003 under a new brand of the ‘County of Origin Series’.
Four games were played across 2001, 2002 and 2003 with the last match being won 56-6 by Yorkshire. Victory for Yorkshire that day tied the overall record up at 44 wins a piece with three draws.
Having been revived once (no games played from 1992 to 2001), there are arguments for and against it being revived again and the yearly reminder of how intense State of Origin understandably leaves Super League fans yearning for a return.
The competition is still played between the academies with Yorkshire winning game one 42-10 at the Jungle earlier in May. Craven Park will host game two in August.
Serious About Rugby League asked rugby league fans if Super League should revive the concept and there were plenty of arguments either way.
Should Super League bring back Yorkshire versus Lancashire? Rugby League fans have their say
With over 220 comments, there’s a lot to be said and we’ve picked out some of the best responses.
Paul Bamforth: Make it competitive, have it at the end of the season and use it as a decider for squad to play in tests if we keep them going.
Daniel Dej Jordan: Do the RFL just not watching any rugby from down under!? Origin is an absolute showpiece now, every player down there wants to get into their origin team! I would personally love to see a war of the roses, think it would be fantastic for our sport.
Andy Hudson: I would have a two-leg tie decided on aggregate. One in each county.
Christopher Moore: It’s done at a youth level and in the amateur game I do think that it would help our international game with a chance to play for your shirt scenario.
David Murphy: Yes, it should be a pathway to international and clubs forced to release players for it, not claiming injuries otherwise waste of time.
Glyn Lewis: No it’s an impossible dream for a SOO style rugby.
Steve Whitehurst: No, tried and failed previously. Why try to make it a super league version of Origin. No comparisons.
Nath James: No, no, no…. didn’t work last time.
James Start: There would be no point because the clubs wouldn’t risk their players,in NRL it’s a great honour to play origin for players and clubs over here it would be top players pulling out before the contest.

It’s all about money
Make it worth playing in
Give all monies from RFL, sponsors ,gate etc and split it between players, staff and clubs represented. Speculate to Accumulate for the first couple of years. Once proven successful more revenue should come in .Make sure the players get well paid. If the money is right they’ll be telling the clubs they are playing regardless. All rep Rugby league should becand I think is mandatory. Clubs shouldn’t get a say in who plays or not
Winner takes 70%
Loses 30%
Curtain raiser Championship war of the roses and women
Plus youth level or even national conference
Played at headingley and a Lancashire ground. If successful move it around different grounds the years after
Make it a full day

Pleased to see these ideas being kicked about. We need to generate money somehow though we do need to be wary of just dragging out an old concept that wasn’t exactly a roaring success last time. Also we have a pretty full calendar already with our regular season, CC, Vegas, WCC and now Ashes on the agenda so where would it fit ?
If we are going to introduce something like this then we need to make it big, make it special and create excitement. Lets not just drag out a tired old idea, give it little support like we usually do and then watch it wither and die as usual. Lets put in some real effort and money and create a spectacle or don’t bother at all.
