Since arriving at Craven Park ahead of 2023, Willie Peters’ transformation of Hull KR has been nothing short of brilliant. Taking them from a side that finished out of the playoffs under Tony Smith and Danny McGuire to treble winners in just three seasons is a feat that couldn’t have been done by many, and he has now turned the Robins into one of the most dominant sides in the league.
At the Man of Steel awards night last week, Peters was given the award for Coach of the Year, after guiding his side to a top-of-the-table finish, a Challenge Cup win and a place in the Grand Final, which they subsequently won.
Of course, awards like this will bring varying opinions there will never be a full agreement between every fan. It all depends on what the award is based on. Is it trophy success? Is it overperforming with the resources available? Or is it the ability to get the best out of a squad of players?
We asked Serious About Rugby League readers on Facebook whether they believed Peters was a deserved Coach of the Year, and whether he was the best coach in Super League.
The majority of fans believe that Peters has done enough to earn that accolade, and after a treble-winning season, it’s hard to disagree.
Decca Mains – What he’s done over 3 Seasons is nothing short of amazing, He has to be the best coach by a mile.
Nicholas Roberts –Â This year he has been
Geoffrey Ross – Best by a country mile
John Jones –Â This year yes without a doubt
Lee Metcalfe – Got to be he’s just won everything
Kevin Brodigan –Â I must say Peters is a very clever shrewd coach he proved it in this final, he got it spot on
Shaun Michael –Â Yes – Peet inherited a great team and culture. Peters has built both in three years and changed the whole KR ethos. Legendary status in Hull.
Whilst many agree he is, some are looking ahead, and think that because he has been so successful over here, there is a chance he will return to the NRL to take a coaching role there, something he has said previously that he is interested in.
Dave Deyes – Just hope he stays NRL will pay him what he wants and he would be going home but think hopefully sir Hudgell will break bank to keep him
Alan Binnington – He’ll be on his way back home soon for a big NRL pay day.
There were also a few other names thrown into the ring, with Wigan boss Matt Peet a strong counter argument.
Liam Dickinson –Â No, Matt Peet is.
Mark Rowan –Â Not a patch on Matty Peet
Alan Taylor –Â I am a Rhinos fan who believed under Peters, KR’s rise to the top was inevitable. However, I do think that the best coach in Super League is Wigan’s Matt Peet!
Lee Carter –Â Brad Arthur
Tuigii Arthurs –Â Daryl Powell
