Brisbane Broncos head coach Michael Maguire hasn’t ruled out a coaching return to Super League in the future with the ex-Wigan Warriors boss revealing that a return is not out of the question.
Maguire, 52, started his head coach career in England, with Wigan Warriors. He led the Cherry and Whites for two seasons having previously worked as an assistant in the NRL, including under Melbourne Storm’s iconic coach Craig Bellamy.
It’s fair to say that Maguire’s time in England was a success with three pieces of silverware picked up across the two seasons as a League Leaders Shield and Grand Final win in 2010 was followed up by a 2011 Challenge Cup win.
More silverware would follow once he returned down under as he oversaw South Sydney Rabbitohs’ 2014 NRL Grand Final win with his second comp win coming in 2025 at Brisbane.
That win obviously qualified the Broncos to contest last week’s World Club Challenge, which Maguire’s side lost, but before the game began he was asked about his coaching future.
Could Michael Maguire ever return to Super League?
Whilst Maguire’s contract with Brisbane is not set to expire until the end of the 2027 season, Madge was still asked about the prospect of a return to Super League.
“You never know,” was his candid response when speaking pre-match on Sky Sports, before he revealed that he still owns a house in England from his time at Wigan.
The Australian said: “I really enjoyed my time and the people over here. It was an incredible two years.
“I’ve still got a house in Standish, believe it or not, so who knows?”
A return would be quite exceptional as very few NRL-winning coaches take their talents to Super League, never mind a two-time winner.
Tim Sheens is one of the exceptions to that rule with the four-time champion coach (three wins before the NRL formed) heading to England to take charge of Hull KR between 2017 and 2019.
Mal Reilly, the Castleford Tigers legend, also returned to England after winning the 1997 ARL competition, with the NRL forming a year later in 1998.
