Hunslet RLFC have announced an ex-Hull KR player as their new coach for the remainder of the season, after parting ways with Dean Muir two weeks ago.
The South Leeds club sit rock bottom of the Championship, after just two league wins in 16 matches.
They have decided to go with a familiar face, and have given former Rovers player Kyle Trout the coaching reigns, after spending over a year as Muir’s right-hand man.
In a statement put out by the club, they said: “Kyle has served as assistant coach since 2024, being a key part of the promotion team’s backroom staff, and steps into the role with a deep understanding of the club’s culture, values, and expectations.”
They continued: “Whilst this season has not met expected performance targets, Kyle has consistently demonstrated strong leadership, tactical acumen, and has earned the respect of both players and staff. The Board believes this continuity will be key to rebuilding momentum and driving improvement.”

On his appointment, Trout said: “The club means a lot to me, and I’m both privileged and honoured to take on this responsibility. We know this season hasn’t been good enough, and we’re committed to making our supporters proud again. That starts with hard work, unity, and belief in the project ahead. The players are under no illusions as to my expectations.”
Hunslet have been riddled with injuries to key players, with former Super League players Greg Eden, Lee Gaskell and Kevin Larroyer all out with injury. Australian half back Lachlan Hanneghan has also refused to play or train with the club, amid transfer speculation from other clubs.
They have a tough run in to finish the season, having to play three of the top four in their final eight games. Unlike Super League, there is still promotion and relegation from Championship to League 1, and they are currently four points off London, Sheffield and Batley ahead of them.
