Ex-Hull FC, St Helens and Castleford Tigers man announces retirement with ‘completely accepting’ message

Former Hull FC, St Helens and Huddersfield Giants centre Jordan Turner has announced his immediate retirement from rugby league.

In a career spanning 20 seasons, Turner made his debut as a 17-year-old for Salford Red Devils in 2006, and went on to make 69 appearances for the club.

Moves to Hull FC in 2010 and St Helens in 2013 led him to become a Super League regular. He earned his first piece of silverware with the Red Vee, as he was part of the 2014 Grand Final winning squad that defeated Wigan Warriors.

Ahead of 2017, he made a brief switch Down Under to the Canberra Raiders. Whilst he never earned an NRL call-up, he spent time in the Queensland Cup, playing seven matches.

A move back to the UK saw him join Huddersfield Giants for four seasons, before he became a Challenge Cup finalist in 2021 with Castleford Tigers.

He moved to then League One side Oldham ahead of 2024, and became captain of his hometown club, guiding them to Championship promotion.

Injuries this year have limited game time, but when he has managed to be out on the field, he has bolstered the Roughyeds in what is already a star-studded second tier team.

Super League winner “completely accepting” of retirement decision

Speaking to Oldham’s club media, RoughyedsTV, the 36-year-old expressed that he has “nothing to be sad about” after looking back on his career.

Turner said: “I’m completely accepting of it. If you look at my career, I played over 400 games, 300 games at Super League, 100-odd tries. The stats are there and I grew kicking a rugby ball in my grandad’s council flat. We sat there and dreamt of me playing for Oldham. If you had told a young version of myself that this is what my career was going to be like it would have blown my mind.”

He added: “I never look back with sadness, I have nothing to be sad about.”

Oldham chairman, Bill Quinn, gave his thoughts on Turner’s career, and how he has become a legend at the club.

He said: “He has been great for us, and has been that leader we needed. When he first came in he spoke about his grandad and his love for Oldham. He has a great family who support him and he will always be welcome at the club.
