Former NRL and Catalans Dragons outside back Matt Ikuvalu has found a new club for 2025 following his release from the Dragons at the end of the 2024 season.
He will return to the Wyong Roos, a side where he played between 2015 and 2018, making 50 appearances for the side.
The Roos now play in the Central Coast Division Rugby League, and Ikuvalu will play alongside with former Leeds Rhinos forward Zane Tetevano at the club.
He’s been looking for a club since his release from the Dragons back in September 2024.
Ikuvalu joined the Dragons in April 2023 and scored 12 tries in 37 appearances for the French side. However, his contract was not renewed for 2025 and Ikuvalu returned to Australia.
The 31-year-old started his NRL career back in 2018 with the Sydney Roosters, making his debut on the wing in June against Wests Tigers.
Perhaps his best game came two years later in July 2020 where he scored five tries in the Roosters’ 42-16 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys. He became the first Sydney player to score five tries in one game since Brian Allsop in 1955.
Next, he joined the Cronulla Sharks for a period following former Sydney assistant coach Craig Fitzgibbon in his first head coaching role. However, Ikuvalu made only five appearances in the 2022 season before requesting a release to join Catalans in 2023.
During his time at the Dragons, he played in their 2023 Grand Final game against Wigan Warriors. The following season, the club finished in 7th and Ikuvalu was released to return back home.
He will now continue his rugby league in Newcastle with the Wyong Roos.
The Roos have a history of producing quality talent and in recent years have handed a debut to Leigh Leopards‘ star Lachlan Lam back in 2018 as well as NRL stars such as Lindsay Collins at Sydney Roosters. Wigan Warriors centre Adam Keighran also started his junior rugby league days at Wyong.
