When the rumour emerged earlier this week that NRL star Roger Tuivasa-Sheck was set for a move to Wakefield Trinity, it sent shockwaves through the Super League fanbase. Now, Trinity boss Daryl Powell has had his say…
Tuivasa-Sheck has been one of the rugby league’s elite players for over a decade, and should he make the move to the UK competition, it would undoubtedly be one of the biggest coup’s in the game’s history.
With 235 NRL appearances to his name and international caps for New Zealand in both rugby league and rugby union, not only would ‘RTS’ be one of the biggest players to ever play in Super League, but his profile alone would mean that more much-needed eyes would be on the competition, and he could be one player that the sport markets itself around.
It was LoveRugbyLeague who first broke the news that the 32-year-old is set to join Wakefield from 2027, and following that report, Trinity boss Powell was asked in his press conference this week to confirm or deny the rumour.
Failing to give anything away, Powell said: “Look, there’s always rumours about, and I think there’s nothing that I can say at the moment.
“There’s nothing I can say, we’ve got a game tomorrow and I’m focused on that.
“We’re an ambitious club, absolutely, you can see that with the signings that we’ve made.
“If Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is on the market, then you’re probably going to be interested, aren’t you? I haven’t got anything to say other than he’s an unbelievable player and that’s it.”
Questioned further about what a player of his calibre would bring to Super League, Powell added: “I think, just him as a player, a dual international, playing for the iconic All Blacks.
“In that way, whoever is able to sign Roger, being able to bring a player of that magnitude to the Super League is a big thing.
“He’s still playing every week in the NRL and looking pretty sharp, so I think he’d have a big impact in this competition.”
