Every Super League player banned after record disciplinary week with two set for tribunal

A massive 23 charges were handed out by the Match Review Panel today as the largest Super League disciplinary verdict this season was confirmed.

That record-breaking disciplinary verdict saw 21 separate individuals charged with eight handed immediate bans and a further two set to face an Operational Rules Tribunal.

The RFL confirmed a new disciplinary system this season for Super League and the divisions below with charges equating to points, instead of immediate bans as was the case previously, and 23 charges in one week marks the most under this new system.

That was with the ultimate goal of keeping the best players on the pitch, however, the system came with a flaw that is currently being exposed.

Players accumulate points throughout the season with points remaining on a player’s record for 12 months, meaning bans are now becoming more frequent as indiscretions from earlier in the year help contribute to bans now.

Eight players have been handed bans whilst two others will head to disciplinary tribunals, where they face the prospect of massive bans. Only four of those bans came as a result of one charge, with the other six are a result of points accumulating over the season.

Below is a summary of all ten players who have been either banned or will head to tribunal, ranked in descending order of the seriousness of the charge.

Which Super League players got banned in Round 25?

Franck Maria (Catalans Dragons) – Grade E charge for Head Contact – Refer to tribunal

It was fairly obvious that a hefty ban would be coming the Frenchman’s way as soon as he made contact with Salford’s loanee Emmanuel Waine, making direct contact of shoulder to head as the Papua New Guinean was knocked out cold, resulting in a red card for Maria.

Catalans head coach Joel Tomkins conceded that a large ban would likely be coming and that is the case with Maria to face a disciplinary tribunal on Tuesday night.

Jack Ashworth (Hull FC) – Grade E charge for Striking – Refer to tribunal

Missed by the referee but picked up on and scrutinised heavily in the post-match, Ashworth took a swinging elbow to the head of Mikey Lewis as the Hull KR man was being tackled. It was an act that has been labelled as “disgusting” by commentator Jon Wells and he’s right, it has no place in the sport.

Loghan Lewis (Salford Red Devils) – Grade D charge for Head Contact – Three-match ban

Salford’s fan favourite was handed a Grade D charge for head contact but a further three points were added to his charge as the Catalans man he tackled could not return. With points already on his record, it’s equated to a three-match ban that ends the forward’s season.

Luke Yates (Warrington Wolves) – Grade D charge for Head Contact – Two-match ban

Placed on report for his tackle, Luke Yates is another who sees his season end after a Grade D charge for Head Contact. Tesi Niu being unable to return ensures that it’s a 15-point charge as well.

Yusuf Aydin (Hull FC) – Grade C charge of Dangerous Contact – One-match ban

Aydin is very lucky that his hip drop tackle on Arthur Mourgue didn’t cause further injury. His tackle technique was awful and rightfully saw him sent to the sin bin.

Jordan Rapana (Hull FC) – Grade B for Head Contact – One-match ban

One of two charges for Rapana with this first one ensuring he misses this week’s game against Warrington Wolves.

Jordan Rapana (Hull FC) – Grade B for Late contact on the passer – One-match ban and a fine

This second charge, however, ends his Hull FC career and it was for a cheap and late shot that was based on emotion as the game and tempers got away from the Black and Whites late on.

Tevita Pangai Jr (Catalans Dragons) – Grade B for Head Contact – One-match ban

The Warrington-bound forward is another whose previous record ensures he is banned despite only receiving three penalty points.

Alrix Da Costa (Catalans Dragons) – Grade B for a Dangerous Throw – One-match ban

A third Catalans player to be banned with Da Costa’s past record also being his undoing.

Amir Bourouh (Hull FC) – Grade A for Late contact on the passer – One-match ban

The fourth Hull FC player banned and a pivotal one as Hull FC now host Warrington without their starting hooker.

Jeremiah Simbiken (Castleford Tigers) – Grade A for Late contact on the passer – One-match ban

Jeremiah Simbiken is likely to miss the rest of the season due to a suspected broken arm but he’s copped a ban anyway following a Grade A charge. The off-contract forward’s previous record sees him punished with a ban.

Minchella and Thompson fined, once again it’s the colour of the shirt you play in that determines the punishment. The RFL are an absolute joke.
