England winger Dom Young made a welcome return to Newcastle Knights to make his second debut for the NRL club.
The move has been speculated for weeks after Young was dropped by his previous club, Sydney Roosters, after a bad patch of form and was reported to be looking for a return to the Knights for a number of weeks now.
He was officially released by the Roosters on Monday and made the move to Newcastle immediately.
Starting against the Dolphins on Saturday morning, he scored the Knights third try in a 26-20 victory in Perth.
Speaking to the NRL’s website after the game, he said: “It felt pretty special putting that jersey on tonight, and the win topped it off, so a great start.
“I was trying to get involved as much as I could to help the boys out, so when we were tired, we had enough on the left edge.
“Me and him (Dane Gagai) always play well together. In our first training session, we were already linking up, so it felt natural. I love playing with him.
A rollercoaster week for England winger Dom Young
The Knights next face high-flying Canberra Raiders, who currently sit top of the NRL standings.
The England winger is excited to play in front of the Newcastle supporters, despite only playing there a few weeks ago whilst still at the Roosters.
He got the recall from Sydney coach Trent Robinson after five Roosters players were called up for State of Origin duties.
He finished: “That’s what I’m really looking forward to, I got a little taste of it a couple of weeks ago, but in the wrong jersey, so to be running out at home next week will be pretty special.”
For the England winger to get a spot in the Ashes squad in the autumn, he needs to be playing regularly, and hopefully, a move back to Newcastle will ensure he remains in Shaun Wane’s plans.
