England star set for mid-season transfer after NRL club decision

NRL

England star Dom Young looks set to make a mid-season exit from NRL club Sydney Roosters in the coming days. That’s according to the Daily Telegraph, who claim a switch to Newcastle Knights is on the cards and is likely to be completed by the end of the week.

In fact, the report claims Young will sign with the Knights on Friday, ensuring he will be in a position to train with the club from the start of next week and play next weekend. The move comes after Young slipped down the pecking order at Sydney Roosters earlier this season with Trent Robinson dropping him from his starting line-up.

The winger started the Roosters’ first seven games of the NRL season and scored five tries in the process. However, last month’s loss to Penrith Panthers prompted the change and so far the Roosters haven’t looked back, winning move games since to jump up the NRL ladder.

Dom Young set for NRL switch

Young has been with the Roosters since the start of last season, with the Yorkshireman touching down 20 times in his first year with the club. However, while he may have fallen out of favour at the Roosters, he is still a fan favourite at Newcastle, where he started his career in the NRL.

The outside back made the move to the Knights from Huddersfield Giants in 2020 and in three seasons with the club, he scored 43 tries in 51 outings. As such, the club have jumped at the chance to bring him back, it seems, with the Knights reaching a financial agreement with the Roosters that could see Sydney contribute around $250,000 to his $450,000 salary.

However, it is claimed that a deal isn’t done just yet with Young seeking advice from family members back home.

Whatever happens, Young will likely have this autumn’s Ashes on his mind, with his place in Shaun Wane’s side far from secure should he spent the rest of the season on the sidelines.
