Danny McGuire’s Castleford Tigers fell to yet another Super League defeat on Thursday night but the head coach sees plenty of positives to take. The Tigers lost 13-12 against Wakefield Trinity at Belle Vue as Mason Lino’s drop goal late on sealed the result.
Castleford were actually 12-0 up at the break as a Jason Qareqare brace and a Sam Wood effort saw the visitors build up a convincing lead at the home of their nearest and dearest rivals. However, a Harvey Smith try around the hour mark managed to swing momentum in Wakefield’s favour and Max Jowitt levelled the scores as he dotted the ball down on the line.
And, with just over four minutes remaining on the clock, Lino stepped up with a scruffy one-pointer to hand Castleford their seventh league defeat of the season.
“Disappointing,” McGuire told Sky Sports after the game. “I thought the lads worked unbelievably hard, they were committed and spirited right to the death.
“We probably shut up shop a little bit early in that second half and we lost territory and possession was heavily in their favour but we kept scrapping away. I’m really proud of the way we went about things but we didn’t get the result and that’s what we’re here for. It hurts but we can be really proud of what the lads did tonight, they worked hard.
“In the second half the possession caught up on us and there was a couple of soft tries we could have defended but when you’re fatigued you make poor decisions and you potentially miss tackles. We’ve got loads we need to work on but we’ll take loads from this game, the way they went about things, the way they worked and we need to show that every week now.
“We’ve had moments of this type of performance. Wakey showed some spirit to come back into it, you have to give them credit as well.
“We’re doing some good things, we’re working hard, the players care and are committed, we’ll get there.”
Danny McGuire on his reason for Castleford Tigers optimism moving forward
Castleford had two debutants involved at Belle Vue, with Hugo Salabio and Jordan Dezaria signing on loan this week. Tom Amone joins the club next week and could be in contention to take on Huddersfield Giants next time around. It seems he could be joined in the side by a few returning faces, too.
“Tom Amone joins us and hopefully we’ll have Brad Singleton back and Louis Senior isn’t far away,” McGuire said looking ahead. “There’s three decent bodies and Innes Senior back. We’re looking a bit healthier.
“We’ve got a few bumps and bruises tonight but we’ve got some competition for places now which is good. If we keep performing like that and keep improving we’ll challenge teams and compete every week.”
