Daly Cherry-Evans opens up on playing future amid sensational Super League switch reports

Fresh off the back of helping Sydney Roosters beat Penrith Panthers to move top of the NRL ladder, Daly Cherry-Evans has spoken on his own playing future amid reports linking him with a switch to Super League.

Cherry-Evans, 37, left Manly Sea Eagles at the end of the 2025 season to join Sydney Roosters for 2026 in what many believed would be his swansong season, however, the NRL great has shown little to no signs of slowing down and he’s currently flying in a team who are moving closer to favouritism for the NRL Grand Final.

That form, as well as Cherry-Evans’ status as one of the NRL greats, meant that links with a Super League move to Hull FC for 2027 were met with such surprise. The half would continue that form in a two-try display as the Roosters knocked off the Panthers, with head coach Trent Robinson in awe at the veteran half’s performance.

“Incredible,” the ex-Catalans coach said post-match.

“373 games, I said before the game that it’s been a gift to coach him and watch a guy prepare, do all the little bits. He’s been working hard on those combination plays and the run play, so to score two running tries in a 12-6 game… he deserved tonight. He was by far the best player on the field.”

Off-contract at the end of the year, his future remains unclear but Cherry-Evans has offered some clarity when speaking to NRL media after the match.

What Daly Cherry-Evans said on his playing future amid Super League links

Asked how he could possibly leave the NRL given the rich vein of form he is in, even at 37, Cherry-Evans laughed before answering.

“I’ve loved every minute of this season, the challenges, the club  has accepted me and it made it home so it’s been fantastic on so many fronts, but there is still a job to do,” he said.

“That focus won’t waver to finish the year and the stuff in the future, I’ll sort it out and talk to you at another time.

“I won’t leave you hanging.”

Pushed further on whether Super League was a genuine option, he responded: “Tonight was a hell of a game so it would be a shame to take away the focus of a game like that.

“So I do promise you, and I don’t often promise you much, that I won’t leave you hanging for too much longer.”

Daly Cherry-Evans will be 38 next February, making him among the oldest player in either Super League or NRL next year, providing he chooses to play on.
