A rugby league club have confirmed that they are investigating the use of homophobic language on social media, whilst reminding fans of their principles and values.
Dewsbury Rams have released a statement to confirm that they are ‘aware of a comment made on social media’, with that comment containing homophobic language.
The comment in question was made on Friday night during the Rams’ game against League One rivals Goole Vikings with Goole running out 20-14 winners.
That result meant the Rams dropped out of the top four of League One, with those four teams set to join the bottom four of the Championship in a Super 8-style competition between the second and third tier of English rugby league.
Early on Saturday morning, less than 12 hours after the conclusion of Friday night’s match, the Rams took to X to release their statement in regards to the homophobic language as they strongly condemned it.

Posting on X, the League One rugby league side said: “Club Statement- The club is aware of a comment made on social media last night that included homophobic language. We are currently investigating the matter and will take the appropriate action in line with our policies.”
In a second post, they added: “We want to make it absolutely clear that the club does not condone this type of language or behaviour in any form. It is completely at odds with our values of inclusion, respect, and equality.”
It’s a sad reality that the club were forced into such a statement, particularly given that June is Pride Month in the UK.
Just two weeks ago, the Rugby Football League had shared a message on their social media channels wishing ‘Happy Pride Month’ and confirming their aim to ‘continue to push our commitment to inclusivity and diversity in the future of our sport’.
Sadly, those posts were met with derision from some so-called rugby league fans and this latest incident appears to be yet another reminder of homophobia within the sport.
