Christian Wade was ‘apologetic’ after his nightmare afternoon for Wigan Warriors against Hull FC, says Matt Peet. The Cherry and Whites were firmly beaten by Hull, who ran out 32-12 victors at the Brick Community Stadium to hand Wigan their third defeat in five games.
Wigan fell well short of their usual high standards as a team and Hull made them pay, but it’s fair to say that Wade proved to be a glaring weak link for the Warriors on the edge. The former rugby union man was playing just his second professional game in the 13-man code, but his errors under the high ball directly led to at least two Hull tries.
Wade looked a threat with the ball in hand and managed to get over the line in the second half for his second Wigan try with some fine footwork on show. But, he was targeted by Hull for much of the afternoon and that was a tactic that paid dividends for the Black and Whites.

“He came to me straight away and said his piece, he was very apologetic,” Wigan boss Matt Peet said after the game. “I pick the team and I’ve seen enough from him in training to feel he warrants an opportunity.
“It’s my responsibility and we’ll stick together on that one and keep working hard to improve and not dwell on it.”
On the game itself, Peet added: “Certainly disappointed with the end scoreline and the half-time scoreline.
“I thought Hull were very good and came with a game plan and executed it very well. I thought for large parts our effort was good but just some of the mistakes we made particularly in backfield presented too many opportunities to Hull FC and they have some good players.”
Wigan weren’t helped by the loss of Zach Eckersley in the first half, which prompted a reshuffle that left a number of players out of position. Eckersley had to be helped from the field and speaking to Sky Sports, Peet confirmed he would be going to hospital.
“He’s going to have an X-ray on his leg so we’ll know more, fingers crossed,” the head coach added.
