Championship stalwart announces retirement as “right time” statement made

Halifax Panthers have announced that long-serving player James Saltonstall will retire, after 11 seasons at the club.

Hometown hero Saltonstall has spent the last decade at the club, and became one of the most consistent wingers in the Championship. He finishes his time at the Panthers having played 254 matches – putting him 17th on the club’s post-war appearance list – and scoring 114 tries.

Making his debut in 2015, the 32-year-old has enjoyed many successes with the West Yorkshire club. As well as being part of the 2023 squad that won the 1895 Cup at Wembley, Saltonstall also helped Halifax to an impressive Challenge Cup run in 2019, where they reached the semi-final stage, before bowing out to St Helens who went on to win the trophy.

He was awarded a testimonial year by the RFL in 2025, having served 10 years at the Panthers. A key event in the year-long would have been a pre-season friendly against Warrington Wolves – the club he spent time in the academy with before turning professional. However, that game was postponed due to adverse weather conditions.

On the international stage, Saltonstall is a three-time Italy international, having represented them in 2013 and 2014. He also took part in a warm-up match for the Italians against England ahead of the 2013 World Cup, in which Italy managed to beat them in dramatic fashion.

“Right time to step away” – Championship veteran reflects on career

Announcing his retirement via the Panthers social media channels, Saltonstall believes he is doing what’s best for his young family.

He said: “It’s been in my mind for a little while.” Obviously, I’ve got 4 kids now and they’re starting to grow up and starting to go on their own sporting careers and take their own paths. So over the last few years I’ve been missing a lot of their stuff to concentrate on my career, and as much as I’ve loved my time and loved playing, I think now is the right time to step away and concentrate on my kids and my family.”

“Everybody that’s watched me over the years knows I’ve always played tough and with my heart on my sleeve. This club means so much to me so I hope I’m remembered as a local lad who gave everything to the club. I might not have been the greatest player or maybe tried a few things that didn’t always come off but that they know that whenever I stepped foot on that pitch, I always gave my all for the club.”

Damian Clayton, Halifax CEO, said: “James has been an absolute stalwart for Halifax Panthers, giving everything to the club over the past 11 seasons. As a hometown lad, he’s provided our fans with countless moments to cheer and has worn the shirt with immense pride across 254 appearances.”

“Scoring an incredible 114 tries is a fantastic achievement and underlines the impact he’s had in a Panthers shirt. Beyond his achievements on the field, Salty’s loyalty and character have made him a real fans favourite here at The Shay. On behalf of everyone connected with the Panthers, I want to thank James for his outstanding service and wish him and his family the very best for the future. He leaves with our sincere gratitude and a place forever in the history of this club.”
