Sheffield Eagles have announced contract extensions for two of their forwards, as they prepare to get their squad in order for the expanded Championship competition in 2026.
After a poor season full of coaching disruptions and player exits, the Eagles finished 11th in the league, third from bottom and nowhere near the play-offs. Earlier this month, they announced that eight players would be leaving the club at the season’s end, including the retiring Kris Welham, the former Salford Red Devils and Hull KR centre.
With full focus now on the 2026 Championship season, that will be formed of both second and third division teams after a rebrand, the Eagles have tied down two of their forwards as they both commit for a further year.
First, former Featherstone Rovers prop Jack Bussey was announced to be staying at the club, in what will be his second year in the Red and Gold. The 33-year-old has also represented Toronto Wolfpack and London Broncos in his career, and brings a wealth of experience to the squad.
Second, former Hull FC prop Masi Matongo put pen to paper on a new deal, with the 29-year-old also signing until the end of 2026. Matongo made over 50 Super League appearances for the Black and Whites, and returned to the sport after a break to link up with the Eagles ahead of the season just gone.
Matongo and Bussey’s signature means that Sheffield now have 12 players contracted for 2026, meaning that some more announcements will be coming in due course, with Craig Lingard wanting a much-improved season next year.
Current contracted players include former Hull KR men Tyler Dickinson and Reiss Butterworth, former Leeds Rhinos hooker Corey Johnson and EX-Castleford Tigers back rower Alex Foster.
