Championship club make double signing as former Castleford Tigers and York Knights men join

Championship club Doncaster RLFC have announced a major double signing, as they look to challenge at the top of the second division in 2026.

The side, currently led by Hull FC legend Richard Horne, have already added a wealth of Super League experience to their squad, with the likes of Muizz Mustapha, Tom Holmes and Cory Aston, among others, preparing to line up for them next season.

After an eighth placed finish in the Championship last season, play-offs will be seen as a minimum for the South Yorkshire outfit, and on paper, their squad looks more than capable of achieving it.

The club are certainly on the up, and even applied for a place in Super League for next season, but were unsuccessful this time around.

With two new additions, though, their on-field performances look set to improve, as they look to increase their 23rd placed finish in the IMG rankings.

Signing for the club this week are former Castleford Tigers prop Gadwin Springer and ex-York Knights centre, James Glover.

The pair both join from Featherstone Rovers, with the club being in a period of financial uncertainty and player wages being missed. Glover even took to social media to air his concerns, and will hope his next career move provides more stability and success.

Springer is a seasoned professional in the English lower leagues, having made his debut in 2014. Moving to Castleford from 2016-2018, he represented Toronto Wolfpack prior to their downfall and went on to have spells with Halifax, Featherstone and Toulouse, before re-joining the Rovers in 2023.

Glover, meanwhile, is a veteran of over 200 matches, and is a keen points scorer too, crossing for 92 tries and kicking 116 goals.

Given the financial problems at Featherstone, both players revealed it has been a difficult time as of late, but are hoping to excel in the next part of their career’s.

“I’m really happy to have everything sorted now,” said Springer. “It’s been a tough few weeks, not really knowing what is happening but we got this done quickly and I’m really pleased to be here.

“There’s a great vision for the club and the future looks really bright so I’m happy to be part of it.”

Meanwhile, Glover added: “I always said that if I wasn’t going to stay at Featherstone, there was only one other club that I’d want to get involved with.

“People that I know here and that I’ve spoken to speak very highly of the club and say you get well looked after.

“That was one of the main reasons that I came here. There’s a bit of a personal connection too with my wife and all her family being from Doncaster.

“But it’s also the project as well. The players they already had and the calibre of players that are coming in. It’ll be a really exciting year for myself and the team.”
