In the same week their pre-season training got underway, Championship side Oldham RLFC have announced the departure of head coach Sean Long.
The St Helens icon has been with the club since the start of 2024, and guided them to promotion from League One in his maiden season.
This year, he capped off another successful season in 2025 by finishing fourth in the regular season, earning a play-off place. Whilst their second tier title hopes fell at the first hurdle, it was still a huge achievement for the Roughyeds to end the season in such an advanced position.
The club announced during a wider interview discussing their Super League rejection, that the players would return to training the week of November 10th, meaning they will have to begin preparations for 2026 without knowing who will lead them going into the next campaign.
Whilst the reasons for his exit remain unclear, what we do know is that the club have set out huge ambitions, with top flight status the club’s biggest focus going forward. Whoever replaces the former half-back has a tough job on their hands, and with the players they have available, will be expected to deliver.
Sean Long departs Championship club Oldham RLFC
A club statement posted on Tuesday evening read:
“Oldham can confirm that Sean Long has left his position as head coach by mutual consent.”
“Sean guided the club to the League 1 title and a top-four Championship finish in his two seasons with the Roughyeds.”
“We thank him for his efforts and he leaves with the best wishes of everyone at Oldham RLFC.”
“Further details of our 2026 coaching team will be shared in due course.”
What is next for Long remains unseen, however the former Great Britain international has spent time coaching at Super League level, having been an assistant at St Helens and Leeds Rhinos.
Any club would benefit bringing in his experience, not only as a player, but as a head coach now too. In his time at Oldham, he delivered a win rate of just under 75%, highlighting his ability, albeit against lower league opposition.
