Warrington Wolves have confirmed the date for their third round Challenge Cup tie as well as a stadium switch for the match, with the Wire now set to host Championship club Sheffield Eagles as opposed to travel to South Yorkshire.
The draw for the third round of the sport’s oldest competition was made earlier this month and it saw the 13 Super League sides who enter (Toulouse Olympique don’t) seeded away from home.
We’ve already seen one instance of the fixture being reversed with holders Hull KR set to host community club Lock Lane, and the same has now happened with the fixture between Warrington and Sheffield.
Initially drawn to be played at Sheffield’s Olympic Legacy Park, both clubs have now confirmed that the Halliwell Jones Stadium will host the game instead.
Sheffield had booked their spot in the third round after seeing off Whitehaven in one of the all-Championship ties, as Craig Lingard’s side won 18-6, having beaten the Cumbrian outfit a week earlier in round one of the league.
Warrington Wolves to host Sheffield Eagles in fixture change
As well as confirmation that the Halliwell Jones Stadium will host the game, Warrington Wolves have also announced when the game will be played.
All third round ties are to be played on the weekend of the 6th to 8th of February and Wire have confirmed they will play on that Friday, 6th. Kick-off will be at 7:30 pm with ticket details to be released in due course.
Sheffield released a statement alongside their brief announcement of the decision as they explained why they’d chosen to reverse the fixture.
They explained: “The decision to revert the game to the Halliwell Jones Stadium offers financial benefits for both clubs and allows for a larger crowd, with the two sides set to meet for the first time since the 1999 Super League season.”
Thus far, only this game and Hull KR v Lock Lane have been confirmed to have a stadium change with the rest of the third round ties expected to take place at the home club’s stadium.
