The Challenge Cup took centre stage this weekend as four clubs battled it for the right to play at Wembley Stadium next month.
Hull KR were the first team to book their spot as they saw off Catalans Dragons 36-12 at the LNER Community Stadium in York. James Batchelor and Jack Broadbent both scored tries on the day, while Mikey Lewis and Joe Burgess also touched down for the Robins in what turned out to be a comfortable victory.
KR last played at Wembley two years ago, falling short in the final against Leigh Leopards on that occasion. However, Warrington Wolves will be their opponents this time around, with Sam Burgess’ side edging out Leigh at the Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens.
Warrington claimed a 21-14 win over the Leopards with the returning Marc Sneyd showing why he is the man for the big occasion.
Of course, eight Super League teams had the weekend off and they’ll be feeling fresh as they prepare themselves for round 11 in Super League, which gets underway on Thursday as St Helens face Catalans in what looks set to be a hugely important contest for both teams.
Catalans boss Steve McNamara might just be checking on a few issues from the weekend heading into Thursday’s game and he’ll be hoping his side can bounce back well from the draining loss.
Willie Peters, Burgess and Adrian Lam will also be assessing some issues and here’s a round up of the injury concerns to emerge from the Challenge Cup semi-finals.
Challenge Cup semi-final injury concerns
Hull KR appeared to come through the game without major incident, with Sam Luckley passing his HIA in the first half of the contest. However, they were without Oliver Gildart who has been ruled out for 16 weeks with a knee injury.
Gildart was named in the 21-man squad but he requires surgery to fix up the issue, meaning he will miss the Cup final and the next four months of Super League action.
Benjamin Garcia was another notable absentee from that game. Garcia has a groin issue and didn’t play in the semi-final.
Warrington appeared to pick up a few injuries in their clash with Leigh, with Lachlan Fitzgibbon being helped off the field in visible pain with what looked like a rib problem.
Matty Ashton left the pitch with a knee injury and didn’t return, while Josh Thewlis picked up a head knock.
Umyla Hanley suffered what looked to be a nasty eye injury during the game and will be assessed this week, while Ben McNamara and Owen Trout both left the field in St Helens for head injury assessments.
