Challenge Cup quarter-final broadcast details locked in as video referee change announced

- 09/07/2022 - Rugby League - Betfred Super League Magic Weekend - The Brief - St. James' Park, Newcastle, England - Video Referee Decision, LED, video.

Broadcast details for the remaining two Challenge Cup quarter-finals have been revealed, as well as an update on how the video referee will work this round.

Friday night marks the first quarter-final with St Helens set to host Catalans Dragons, however, that game as well as Saturday’s clash between Warrington Wolves and Leigh Leopards were not picked up by broadcaster BBC.

The RFL confirmed back in March that all four Challenge Cup quarter-finals would be broadcast with Hull KR versus York Knights slated for BBC Two, whilst Wakefield Trinity versus Wigan Warriors would air on BBC One.

It’s now been confirmed that Super League+ will show the games between Saints and Catalans and Wire and Leigh, with those matches set to be pay-per-view.

Challenge Cup quarter-final video referee update

Whilst it’s a major positive that all games will be aired, it does come at a cost both financially and to the product in that the new sped-up video referee system will not be implemented.

The video referee process changed for 2026 with referees awarding tries on field and allowing the video referee to review in the minute before the conversion was taken, with anything that needed further scrutiny seeing the clock stopped.

That was not the case in Las Vegas and it will not be the case in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals, as explained by the RFL in the statement confirming broadcast details.

The statement explained: “As video referees will not be in control of their own replays in the games shown on SuperLeague+ there will be no ‘live review’ process there and, for consistency, across all four quarter-finals. This was also the case when Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR faced each other in their Super League fixture Las Vegas earlier this season.

“The ‘live call’ system, used in Super League prior to this year and in Vegas, will be adopted by officials instead.”
