Catalans Dragons boss Steve McNamara has shared his thoughts on halfback Luke Keary’s thoughts on Super League and its broadcast rights.
Keary was very vocal in an interview with Wide World of Sports, claiming that Super League is currently ‘unwatchable’ and that “the game is horrendous over here”.
McNamara showed full support for his off-season signing, admitting that the media may have just picked out some quotes without covering the whole interview.
The Catalans Dragons boss said: “I think he’s a player who’s got a lot of rungs on the board.
“He’s played it at its highest level, he’s experienced the coverage at its highest level and he wants what’s best for the game.
“That quote was part of an interview. I think if you get the full interview, the full transcription and see where he goes on to next, he talks about the unbelievable talent in the competition and the platform that he’d like them to have going forward.”
McNamara stressed Keary’s experience in the NRL means that he’s used to much more exposure coming from Australia and Sydney, especially.
He added: “He’s come from the NRL, we know it’s a lot bigger than here, we all respect it.
“Everyone does a great job over here to televise our game, it’s not a criticism of that. It’s just the overall size of the game.
“We’ve been crying out for people with strong opinions and not just saying the normal things and someone’s come out and done it.”
Catalans Dragons’ halfback comments noted by RFL and RL Commercial
Keary’s comments have been noted by the RFL and RL Commercial, with the head of the latter responding to his interview.
Rhodri Jones of RL Commercial called Keary’s comments “dramatic” and said that he’s “not necessarily in agreement with what he’s got to say”.
Jones hopes that his exposure to Magic Weekend and a sell-out Challenge Cup semi-final against Hull KR next weekend will change Keary’s opinion.
