Castleford Tigers made the shock decision to sack Danny McGuire late on Monday night, days after their home loss to Huddersfield Giants. It means McGuire leaves nine months after his appointment with his three-year deal cut short after just 18 games, but where did it all go so wrong?
There are plenty of answers to that question but another question that needs to be asked is whether McGuire actually deserved to be sacked?
For many fans and neutrals, the answer is no. It was widely accepted that Castleford had the worst squad in Super League heading into 2025 and the club were clearly on the first step of a rebuild.
The decision to get rid of Craig Lingard surprised many last year but replacing him with a first-time head coach such as McGuire, who was one of the competition’s best ever players, pointed to the idea he would be given time to lead the project.
Fourteen losses from eighteen games later and that idea has been proven wrong with McGuire the latest Castleford coaching victim, but where did it all go so wrong for him in his spell with the Tigers?

Recruitment
Recruitment isn’t exactly a moment but more a systemic failing at Castleford and one that has gone on for far too long. By the time McGuire was appointed, all of the Tigers’ recruitment had been done but questions can already be asked whether it was enough.
Daejarn Asi has failed to fully develop, perhaps something that can be laid at McGuire’s door given they share a position whilst Judah Rimbu has already returned Down Under. Zac Cini looks a smart pick-up but hitting a 33% success rate on overseas signings is not going to help your first-time head coach.
Under McGuire in the off-season, the club loaned in Dan Okoro from Warrington Wolves but the prop isn’t a difference maker. Recruitment has taken a clear step up under Chris Chester but McGuire will never benefit from that which is a shame.
Loss to Bradford Bulls – 9th February, 2025
The first competitive game that Danny McGuire took charge of was the Challenge Cup clash against Bradford Bulls and it’s fair to say, it was a lowlight from his time with the Tigers.
Castleford lost 18-16 at Odsal in what was a woeful performance which saw plenty of players lack effort. They became the only Super League side to lose to lower league opposition and early on it looked like an example of a team who simply weren’t playing for their coach.
Ironically, they’d answer that a week later resoundingly by taking Hull KR to golden point and almost beating them with that being a result that looks even better now. What went wrong at Odsal is unknown but it’s an easy stick to beat McGuire with when you look at why he has been sacked.
Loss to Wakefield Trinity – 17th April, 2025
Unsurprisingly, another turning point is a another loss but it’s the nature of the defeat. Round Eight saw Castleford travel to Belle Vue to take on rivals Wakefield Trinity. McGuire looked set for just his second win as a Castleford coach when the scores were 12-0 approaching the hour mark.
Three unconverted tries in the first half had given the Tigers that lead and they looked good value to keep it and record the win before a complete collapse in the final twenty minutes, which led to a 13-12 defeat.
It was a loss that stung at the time but looking back it must hurt even more as it seemed to highlight the complete lack of calm the Tigers had, be that through personnel or due to coaching.
Loss to Huddersfield Giants – 3rd July, 2025
The final nail in the coffin was clearly the loss to Huddersfield but even after that defeat, nobody predicted the news that McGuire wouldn’t be coaching the Tigers’ next match.
Interestingly, that next match comes against Salford Red Devils where a win would be expected and perhaps action has been taken now to remove McGuire before he got that win and potentially led the club to a false dawn.
Either way, the performance against Huddersfield was simply awful with McGuire calling it one of the worst games of Super League he had seen, and he probably wasn’t exaggerating. Sacking him seems harsh but Martin Jepson puts the money in and can therefore act as he wants, it just seems that the decision is counter-intuitive to hiring a rookie head coach in the first place.
