Castleford Tigers see Benidorm pre-season fixture against Championship side cancelled

Oldham RLFC have confirmed that their pre-season friendly with Castleford Tigers, which was set to take place in Benidorm, is now cancelled.

The two teams were set to face off in Spain, following the success of Castleford’s trip over there last year, where they faced the Valencia Hurricanes.

The Roughyeds were set to travel over for this year’s instalment, however a breakdown in communications between the event organiser and the two clubs have forced the whole event to be cancelled.

In a video released by Oldham on Thursday evening, chairman Bill Quinn informed fans of the news, and said that due to a lack of information of key things like the date, venue and kick-off time being unconfirmed, the Championship side were unable to sell tickets or travel packages as they simply didn’t know what was going on.

The Bash was due to take place from the 6th-1oth January, and would once again include the Hurricanes, as well as amateur side Kippax. The five-day event was set to be headlined by the Tigers and Oldham facing each other, but that will no longer happen.

Quinn did say, however, that there will still be a pre-season game between the two clubs, and will likely take place on the weekend of the 10th/11th January, after the cancellation left both teams without a crucial warm-up fixture.

As things stand, a clash against the Roughyeds would be the second fixture that Ryan Carr is in charge of Castleford, with the club also having a game scheduled against Featherstone Rovers on December 28.

Quinn also confirmed that the two clubs will be making a joint statement on the cancellation in the coming days.
