“We took a step back” – Castleford Tigers poor in defeat to Toulouse Olympique as boss gives verdict

Castleford Tigers boss Ryan Carr was left unimpressed by his side’s efforts this weekend, following defeat to Toulouse Olympique.

The Tigers were downed 24-12 in France, and after showing effort in defeat against Wigan Warriors, looked like a completely different side in round two.

Toulouse outplayed Castleford in the majority of areas, with Carr most disappointed about his side’s defensive effort.

The home side opened the scoring after just two minutes through Mathieu Jussaume, before further tries came from Reubenn Rennie (twice) and Benjamin Laguerre.

Krystian Mapapalangi impressed again, as he scored his first try in new colours, whilst Jason Qareqare also managed to get over.

“It was a disappointing performance from us,” Carr said in his review.

“We had been taking a lot of steps forward as a group in previous weeks, but I feel like we took a step back last night.

“Our attitudes towards our defence wasn’t good enough, and we will be working hard on that this week.

“I thought we created enough opportunities with the ball, but ultimately if we don’t tackle well we won’t earn the right to gain field position.

“We as a club have higher expectations of what our level of performance should be, and we will be working all week to ensure we respond back at home.”

Castleford will host Huddersfield Giants at the Jungle on Friday evening, a game that, given both sides’ start to the season, will be seen as a must-win, even at this early stage.
