Danny McGuire was an “unfortunate victim” of Castleford Tigers’ poor recruitment according to Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin, with the ex-St Helens captain pulling no punches in his assessment.
Wilkin has been very vocal since the sacking of Danny McGuire, first claiming that he thought it was a ‘joke’ before then questioning the decision given the resources available at Castleford Tigers.
Having stated in Round One that Castleford Tigers have the ‘worst squad’ in Super League, Wilkin has argued that the club’s current position of tenth simply reflects where they rank in the competition.
Speaking ahead of the club’s shock loss to Salford Red Devils, for which Wilkin was on commentary duties, he explained the reasons behind the poor on-field results for Castleford – putting it all down to poor recruitment.
“In a salary cap sport, what’s essential is recruitment and it’s been a fundamental flaw of the Castleford club for some years,” Wilkin argued.
“Since 2017, Daryl Powell’s standout year, they’ve really not recruited well in terms of the playing personnel on the field.”
Castleford Tigers coach ‘falls victim to sloppy recruitment’
Recruitment ahead of the 2025 season mainly came before McGuire was even appointed with the likes of Judah Rimbu (since released), Zac Cini and Daejarn Asi all signing under Craig Lingard.
Whilst Cini and Asi have been fine, they’ve not come in and been the game-changers required to help move a struggling team up the table whilst the only pre-season recruitment after McGuire’s appointment was the season-long loan of Dan Okoro, who hasn’t proved good enough to play.
Mid-season signings have helped but Wilkin argued that fundamentally a lack of investment is what had led to the performances, for which McGuire was sacked.
He argued: “Danny McGuire is the unfortunate victim of an under investment in the playing squad that has been going on for way too long.
“Chris Chester has been brought in to deal with that to bring more recruits in and better recruits but Danny McGuire falls victim to a sloppy period of recruitment at the club.
“He has got the tenth-best squad in the competition and lo and behold, they sit in tenth.”
Chris Chester will now help oversee the appointment of a new head coach whilst also working on their recruitment, the area which Wilkin has called for improvement in.
Assessing that, he said: “You don’t sack a coach unless you want to change things so there’s an acknowledgment they want to be in a better position but I suggest they look at recruitment and that’s why they’ve brought Chris Chester in but they’ve got this year to deal with.”
