The decision by Castleford Tigers to sack Danny McGuire made no sense as the time and it makes even less sense now, particularly following a humiliating loss to Salford Red Devils and a strange explanation from the club’s owner.
Sacked after just 18 games in charge, of which only four were won, Danny McGuire became the latest in a string of Castleford Tigers coaches to be axed. Given the club’s record at rattling through coaches it shouldn’t be a surprise, however, based on what was said at the time of his appointment, it certainly is.
McGuire joined Castleford as an assistant ahead of the 2024 season, appointed in October 2023 just weeks after he left Hull KR. Six weeks later, Martin Jepson joined the Castleford Tigers’ Board of Directors, before then investing £1.2 million into the club in April 2024.
Jepson would ascend in power and control at the club, taking up an option to purchase in October. What followed was the sacking of Craig Lingard and the appointment of Danny McGuire on a three-year deal, with both Jepson and McGuire having both worked at the club for approximately one year.
At that time, all things pointed to the club heading in a new direction and backing a young first-time head coach but just nine months later, talk of a new direction is happening again.
What Martin Jepson said when he appointed Danny McGuire
Castleford Tigers’ confirmation of Danny McGuire as their new head coach back in 2024 saw Martin Jepson quoted as saying: “I have been hugely impressed with Danny’s ambition, his determination, and his technical knowledge of the game and I look forward to working alongside him. I am also sure Danny will be able to help attract like-minded players to the Club as we continue to build for next season.”
Huge support from the new owner and rightly so given he made the decision to axe Craig Lingard and appoint McGuire all within a fortnight of taking up his option to buy the club outright.
A key point within Jepson’s statement was his belief McGuire would “help attract like-minded players” ahead of the 2025 season. Whether players weren’t attracted to the project of whether money wasn’t put forward, only one player arrived ahead of the new season and that was Warrington Wolves’ Dan Okoro on a season-long loan.
As such, McGuire headed into the 2025 season with what was widely regarded as the worst squad in Super League. First-time head coach, poor quality squad, three-year contract with vision, yet sacked within nine months.

Explaining that decision, Martin Jepson spoke at half-time of Sunday’s loss to Salford Red Devils but his explanation begged more questions than answers.
Jepson stated: “We just felt that we’re in a reset period and we’re already in recruitment drive for next year. We’ve got plans for what we want to do next year and we just felt that a change of direction was needed.”
The first question would be how many reset periods can a club have given that the reset was in October 2024 when McGuire was appointed, however, Jepson pointed to the fact he had “inherited a club where we were weak in certain areas”, pointing to the squad quality.
Put to him excellently by Jon Wilkin that Danny McGuire inherited the same squad, Jepson responded: “We’ve been tinkering with that over the course of the year and you have to look at the whole thing and we felt it was the right time to move on at this moment in time.”
The change of heart within nine months begs questions. Castleford knew they were appointing a first-time head coach and Jepson, as above, admitted that it was a squad ‘weak in certain areas’.
Squad improvements will now be overseen by Chris Chester, a man with an excellent track record of signing players but why Danny McGuire couldn’t be the man to lead that improved team is still unclear.
Whether we learn more is to be seen but for now, you’re hard pushed to think that the decision makes any sense.
