Castleford Tigers have confirmed that assistant coach Brett Delaney has left the club with immediate effect.
It brings an end to an 18-month tenure with Delaney appointed at Wheldon Road ahead of the 2025 season, joining alongside Danny McGuire as part of his ex-Leeds Rhinos’ teammates coaching staff.
Both McGuire and Delaney had worked at Hull KR under Willie Peters before making the switch to Castleford Tigers and despite McGuire being sacked at the end of the 2025 season so that the club could hire Ryan Carr, Delaney stayed.
Twelve rounds into the new season and that’s changed with the club releasing a statement to confirm that Delaney has left the club.
That statement read: “Castleford Tigers can confirm that Coach Brett Delaney has left the Club.
“We would like to thank Brett for his efforts over the last 18 months and wish him well for the future.”

What next for Castleford Tigers and Brett Delaney?
It’s perhaps not a major surprise that Delaney has left the club with Ryan Carr clearly keen to implement his own coaching staff, something he was not able to do heading into 2026 as Delaney and fellow assistant Scott Murrell remained on.
With Delaney, the club’s defensive coach, now having left it means that a replacement will be sought out and the club have confirmed a loose timeline for that.
Castleford’s statement read: “Chris Chester will work closely with Ryan Carr to review the coaching department before making an appointment for the 2027 season.”
Delaney leaves with the Tigers boasting the second-worst defensive record in Super League, conceding an average of 29.66 points per game, whilst they have also shipped 50 or more points on three occasions with the worst result being the 72-6 loss to Warrington Wolves back in March.
The former Leeds Rhinos player had formed a reputation as one of Super League’s best defensive coaches with Hull KR among the best defensive sides in the competition in 2024, his last season at Craven Park.
As such, he will surely be a man in high demand going forward but for Castleford, they move a step closer to providing Ryan Carr with a set-up for 2027 where the Tigers can truly take a shot at the top six.
