Castleford Tigers blow as star man set for extended lay-off after injury setback

Castleford Tigers’ Tex Hoy looks set to miss another month of Super League action, head coach Danny McGuire has confirmed.

Hoy has been struggling with a calf injury and hasn’t featured in Castleford’s last three games as a result. Zac Cini has done a fine job in Hoy’s absence, though, and it seems the natural centre might have to get used to playing at number one with the compatriot being dealt something of a setback.

A fresh scan has confirmed the former Hull FC man has torn his calf, which is somewhat worse that the strain the Tigers initially thought he had. As such, Hoy is looking at another four to six weeks on the sidelines, McGuire has confirmed, and given his importance to the Tigers cause that comes as a huge blow to the West Yorkshire outfit.

Castleford Tigers boss confirms Tex Hoy blow

“Tex is going to be a few weeks,” McGuire said when asked by Serious About Rugby League for an update on the issue. “He’s got a decent calf tear.

“We thought it was only a minor strain but he’s then had another ultrasound scan and it’s come back that he’s got quite a decent tear in his calf. I’d say he’s going to be a few weeks, probably four to six from now.

“Fletcher Rooney is back, he’ll play for the reserves on Friday and that gives an option there as full-back cover. It’s disappointing because I thought Tex had been really good for us at the early part of the year.”

It means Hoy will miss a key period of the season for the Tigers, which continues this evening when Huddersfield Giants head to The Jungle. Castleford will be favourites for that win and should they get it, they’ll manage to move back to within two points of ninth placed Catalans Dragons.

The Tigers take on Salford Red Devils and Warrington Wolves before the month is out and they’ll be keen to kick on over that period.
