Brad Arthur gives Leeds Rhinos injury update on Harry Newman and Mikolaj Oledzki

England centre Harry Newman is expected to be fit for Leeds Rhinos’ huge home clash with Hull KR on Thursday, after an injury scare during Saturday’s 64-6 win at Castleford Tigers.

Newman, who scored Leeds’ first try, needed treatment to a knee injury and, after initially playing on, was replaced in the second half.

He is ever-present for Rhinos this season and coach Brad Arthur is confident that won’t change this week.

“It was a knee on knee clash and it started to stiffen up. We’ve got a short turnaround into Hull KR on Thursday so we thought we’d take him off for the last 15 minutes. He’ll be okay for Thursday.”

Full-back Lachie Miller, Leeds’ second scorer, was also given a rest and Arthur explained: “He had a really strong 60 minutes so it was to give him a rest and look after him a bit and get some game time into some of the other guys.”

Teenage prop Presley Cassell – who grabbed a try on his first start for Rhinos – spent two minutes off the field under the green card rule after damaging a shoulder during his second stint.

He was sent back on and Arthur explained: “He got a fair whack there. We weren’t sure if we were going to put him back out there, but it was a good opportunity when there wasn’t anything structurally to get him to push through it.

“Not toughen him up, because he is a tough kid, but to push through that tough time, because there might be a time that happens again when we are not up by 60 and we can’t afford to take him off and he has to stay there and get it done. Might as well get some practice now.”

Leeds Rhinos boss gives injury latest

Arthur also confirmed Mikolaj Oledzki “may” be available for this week’s game following a fractured cheekbone, but added: “The other [injured players] are still a week or two after that.”

An unforced change saw hooker Andy Ackers make a first start since March, with Jarrod O’Connor dropping to the bench.

The team boss said that was due to “game time, mixing it up – keeping them all on their toes to make sure every week they want to go out and perform at their best”.

He said: “It is going to be a big last seven weeks going into the finals and we just need to make sure everyone’s ready to play and has got enough game time before we start to look at what our best combination is.”
