Adrian Lam issues Leigh Leopards’ injury update as loan stance aired

Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam has made an admission on the prospect of loaning players in amid an injury update following his side’s fourth consecutive loss in Super League.

Lam watched his side lose 18-14 to Wakefield with the Leopards now winless in Super League since the opening round, when they defeated Leeds Rhinos.

Since then their injury luck has been torrid and it’s massively impacted their ability to win, however, it was discipline issues that the Leigh boss blamed for their defeat at Belle Vue.

Speaking in his presser post-match, Lam reacted: “Obviously, we need to win, and that’s our priority so there are frustrations around the fact there’s a lot of effort there but no result at the end.”

On a four-game slide in the league, Lam admitted: “It is a concern and I think that’s why the importance of this performance next week against Toulouse at home is so crucial for us. We’ve just got to find what it takes to grind out a win.”

Leigh Leopards possibly forced to use loan market

One positive from Friday night was that no fresh injuries were recorded despite knocks to both front-row forwards, Robbie Mulhern and Owen Trout.

On the prospect of players returning, the Leigh boss conceded: “Not much is going to change over the next seven days. I can’t see anyone coming back into that.

“I think we only had 11 players train this week, we’re doing our best and we’ve just got to find a win along the way. Next week becomes really really important.”

It looked like both Mulhern and Trout could have suffered injuries but Lam revealed that both men are far better than was first anticipated.

He said: “I think (Robbie) Mulhern had a niggly forearm. We thought he’d broke it at one point but I don’t think that’s the case so that’s good news. It looked like (Owen) Trout rolled his ankle at one point but that looks like it’s going to be good news, so we got through tonight hopefully without anyone missing last week.”

Having laid out his desire not to use the loan market when speaking to the media mid-week, Lam admitted that it may have to become a reality.

When asked if loan additions could be made this week, he said: “If there are any injuries from tonight then we would probably have to.”
