Yorkshire wrapped up the Academy Origin series with a dominant win that saw Leeds Rhinos and Hull FC players star along with punches thrown late on.
Having won the first game back in May at Wheldon Road, Yorkshire confirmed a 2-0 series win as they won 40-10 at Hull KR’s Craven Park.
It was an incredibly similar scoreline to the first match in May when Yorkshire won 42-10 and a number of try-scorers from that day crossed over again today.
Leeds Rhinos’ Marcus Qareqare, Zac Lloyd, Joe Diskin and George Brown all scored in May and they scored again today with Joe Diskin another Leeds youngster to get on the scoresheet.
Lloyd was selected as the Man of the Match by commentator Paul Cooke and deservedly so with his try being the opener and his offload setting up Isaac Holdsworth for Yorkshire’s second.
Leeds Rhinos dominated the squad with seven of the starting XIII and three of the six bench players also hailing from the Headingley club, however, there was a strong Hull FC prescence as well with Lloyd and Callum Kemp combing well at full-back and half-back.
Leeds Rhinos youngsters put on a show as Yorkshire hammer Lancashire
Yorkshire opened the scoring through Zac Lloyd who benefited from a clever Ellis Lingard offload and whilst Yorkshire dominated possession and territory, it was Lancashire who scored next.
Off the back of a scrum play, Warrington’s Ewan Irwin attacked the line to square up defenders before shifting it to his academy teammate Lachlan Webster who set tup Wigan’s Sam Dickenson in the corner.
Zac Lloyd then created the second with his offload to Isaac Holdsworth, a Wire product playing for Yorkshire, with Holdsworth’s ling arm stretching to ground the ball.
A break from the Warrington man then saw the field open up before Leeds Rhinos’ centre Oscar Brown scored and from there the floodgates opened.
The Kemp brothers combined to set up Joe Diskin before George Brown then dived over from dummy-half to make it 30-4. Marcus Qareqare would then score in the corner before Lancashire found some success on the resulting short kick-off.
Wigan’s Shea O’Connor made a big impact after coming on and he managed to score from close range but Yorkshire finished the scoring through Callum Kemp after his smart dummy.
The game was marred somewhat by a dangerous tackle from Ellis Lingard, tipping O’Connor beyond the horizontal and putting him in a dangerous position. O’Connor reacted by throwing punches but the referee possibly missed that as only Lingard was sent to the bin.
