‘Sir’ Kevin Sinfield is set to become more than just a nickname, with the Leeds Rhinos legend on the verge of finally landing a knighthood.
Ahead of the King’s Birthday honours list that is set to be revealed over the weekend, a report in The Mirror has claimed that Sinfield, who received a CBE in the 2023 New Year’s Honours, will be made a ‘Sir’.
Sinfield, who had a glistening career as a Leeds player from 1998 to 2015, has raised over £11 million for Motor Neurone Disease charities following his former teammate and best friend Rob Burrrow’s diagnosis.
The 45-year-old has recently revealed his latest challenge – 7 in 7: The Grand Finale – which will see him run between all 12 English Super League clubs before finishing at Old Trafford on the evening of the 2026 Grand Final.
Calls from the rugby league community have continued to grow, with plenty wondering why a knighthood hasn’t happened sooner. However, Sinfield has always fired back, saying it was never about the personal accolades; he is simply “running for a mate.”
Burrow revealed his MND diagnosis in 2019, and since then he and Sinfield, alongside Doddie Weir and other sporting icons, have been at the forefront of trying to campaign for funds in order to find a cure for the horrible diagnosis.
Perhaps the most iconic photo of all their fundraising journey is the picture of Sinfield carrying Burrow over the line at the 2023 Leeds Marathon, in an image that truly captures the pair’s bond.
Sinfield is expected to be confirmed in the honours list in the next few days, and should he be on the list, will collect his award in due course.
