Super League Magic Weekend is just three weeks away with the event returning to Newcastle after a year away, and fans have debated whether the North-East city is the best for the event.
St James Park had become somewhat of the spiritual home for Magic Weekend with Super League heading there first in 2015. The event would be held in Newcastle until 2023 barring one year in Liverpool and one cancelled event.
However, last year it moved to Elland Road in Leeds but that event fell short as it recorded the second-lowest attendance in the 17 seasons that the event had been held.
Of those 17 seasons, seven have seen St James Park as the venue for Magic Weekend with this year’s edition on May 3rd and 4th set to be the eighth time that Super League heads to the city.
Fans were certainly pleased about the event making a return to Newcastle, however, they were in debate over whether it was the best city for Super League’s showpiece event.
Rugby League fans split on best Super League Magic Weekend venue
Asked, ‘Is Newcastle the best city for Magic Weekend?’, fans were split in their opinion with a number backing St James Park but a number of other options were suggested for the showpiece event in Super League.
Sharon Blackwell: “No, it needs to go back to the Etihad.”
Mike Shaw: “Better than Leeds, that’s for sure.”
Nick Waddington: “Yes. I love watching Leeds at Elland Road but it was absolutely shocking for Magic Weekend.”
Lesley Ann Cowling: “Yes, there’s a great atmosphere, the stadium is minutes from the city centre, the geordies are so welcoming and the games are always spectacular. Newcastle is the best place for the Magic Weekend by far.”
Rick Edwards: “Torn between Cardiff and Newcastle. Both cities are fantastic.”
Robert Ferguson: “Yes, with Cardiff a close second.”
Cameron Pickavance: “Bramley Moore Docks would be class for next season.”
Shazza Langhorne: “It needs to go back to putting rugby on the road like it was meant to do and move venue more.”

Think we have to wait and see with Bramley Dock, still problems to resolve, to enter the ground most fans will go via a swing bridge, which has a limited weight, and last trial match, with 25,000, police had to restrict how many were on the bridge at one time? Was this never considered?
