Rugby League fans say same thing after what happened in ‘shocking’ talkSPORT interview

Joe Batchelor of St Helens on talkSPORT discussing all things Magic Weekend and rugby league.

Rugby League fans have reacted in unison to a ‘shocking’ interview on talkSPORT today ahead of the Magic Weekend in Leeds at Elland this weekend.

St Helens’ Joe Batchelor was dealt the short straw as he was interviewed on the Alan Brazil Show on talkSPORT and it was clear from the word go that Brazil and his team had no idea what they were doing.

Brazil wasn’t aware of what point of the Super League season we’re at and Batchelor was forced to face up to some embarrassingly under-prepared questions.

Here is a video of some of the awkward goings on, which Batchelor did well to navigate.

It’s safe to say that rugby league fans aplenty were fuming. Here are some of the best reactions to the interview below:

Mrs C: Well done Joe for keeping your cool and how ignorant of Talk Sport to have you on without doing any prep.

Trinity Heritage: Embarrassing … nobody done any research whatsoever … well done Joe for dealing with these two.

Mark Brown: What an absolutely shocking interview, very disrespectful to Joe and to his game.

Alan Harrison: I was listening live this Morning and couldn’t believe the ignorance of the presenters about Rugby League and Magic Weekend. Wouldn’t know that the station covers live games through the season. Didn’t even know how far into the season we are!

DaveHKR: Well done Joe Batchelor on having to contend with those two. If only the presenters had done some research.

SaintsMariner: Cringeworthy but not surprising. Well done putting up with that, Joe!

Pepe: Fair play to Joe here, but how abysmal is this?! They know nothing about the sport, couldn’t really care about the sport it seems….

Daniel Jordan: talksport not knowing if the super league season has even started yet!? @pcooke06 you need to have words with Brazil next time you’re on talksport commentary.

Never listen to Talk Sport! but should Super League not be vetting broadcast interviews, supplying whoever I’d being interviewed with briefing, and the broadcaster with FACTS!

My time in the music business I always fully briefed the broadcaster with detailed facts about the person being interviewed and the artist how to respond.

I don’t understand the annoyance at this interview. Two things seem obvious that the interviewers felt RL wasn’t important, deserved no respect and demanded no effort on their part. All this is a direct result of years and years of such attitudes being unchallened allied with a sport that has no self-confidence, and years of blamin itself for the reasons this is the case. Unless and until RL can address and chane this such terrible interviews will become accepted as the norm.
