Rugby League fans split on biggest Super League rivalry as Hull FC v Hull KR and Wigan Warriors v St Helens debate rages

Rugby League Super League ball

It’s a debate that rugby league fans have been having for years and with Super League’s Rivals Round on the horizon, many have shared their thoughts on the sport’s biggest rivalry.

Rivals Round will see Wigan Warriors host St Helens, Hull FC host Hull KR and Wakefield Trinity host Castleford Tigers as three clear-cut rivalries, whilst the remaining fixtures pit Leeds Rhinos against Huddersfield, Catalans Dragons against Salford Red Devils and Leigh Leopards against Warrington Wolves.

Within Super League, two clear rivalries stand out with Hull FC versus Hull KR and St Helens versus Wigan being the two most popular answers.

It may depend on which side you support but there’s no denying that both rivalries are huge, especially to the local area.

Here are the best comments from our Facebook page and across social media.

Rugby league fans debate the sport’s biggest rivalry

Peter Platten: Hull v Rovers. Two teams, one city, divided by a river. West v East. Like in football City v United, Celtic v Rangers. Lots of rivalries in both rugby and football but always open to conjecture and opinion.

David Turner: Hull v Hull KR is the only true derby in Super League and I’m a Rhinos fan.

Andy Aspey: It’s Wigan v Saints, the fact is the games mean more. Wigan v Saints has decided who wins the league and who wins the GF  for years, they’ve met in way more big games with titles on the line than any other rivalry. Hull v Hull KR is a big rivalry but it’s never been for the SL title and hasn’t been for the challenge cup since 79-80. Wigan v Saints is for titles, Hull v Hull KR is for 2 points and Leeds v Bradford hasn’t been a rivalry for 13 years.

Stephen ‘Speaky’ Speakman: Wherever you live will determine which rivalry means the most. For me, it’s Wigan v Saints.

Jacqui Harrison: Without question, and supported by statistical evidence of attendance numbers, is the Saints v Wigan game. This match was, is and always will be the biggest derby day rivalry match on an Easter weekend.

Adam Camm: Biggest, probably Saints and Wigan. Most spiteful, Hull derby. Early 2000s Rhinos v Bulls was a big one but with Bradford’s disintegration, it’s nothing now.
