Rugby League fans disagree over Mikey Lewis decision

Hull KR star Mikey Lewis at the Man of Steel awards, where he picked up the top player prize.

Mikey Lewis picked up the Super League Man of Steel on Tuesday evening and the decision has led to reaction aplenty.

There can be no doubting Lewis’ impact on Hull KR‘s season, with the half-back having scored 19 tries and assisted another 24 during the regular season alone.

Rovers face Wigan Warriors in the 2024 Super League Grand Final on Saturday after narrowly edging past Warrington Wolves in an enthralling semi.

Ahead of the Old Trafford spectacle, Lewis picked up the Man of Steel while his coach, Willie Peters, was named the Coach of the Year for guiding his Robins side to the big one.

But not everyone agrees that his star playmaker, Lewis, should have picked up the gong earlier this week. Below are an array of rugby league fans who reacted on our Facebook page to the news of Lewis’ achievement.

Linda Barber: Congratulations Mikey Lewis, the stats say it all. Well deserved.

Judith Walford: Well done Mikey Lewis from a Wigan and Leigh fan.

Neil Lee: I’m a Salford Red Devils RLFC fan and it was good to see Sneyd there as he had been fantastic. How French was not that though shows the process is flawed.

Stacey Beckett: If Bevan wasn’t injury would not stand a chance.

Christopher Tomlinson: Great number 7 reminds me a lot of Shaun Edward’s at Wigan always wanting to get under the skin of the opposition.

Jackie Upson: I hate to say but …….Well done you 2 !!! Give credit where credits due ! Well deserved.

Colin Ware: Well done credit where credits due, however come on Wigan up the pie men.

Dave Wood: Wigan fan, thought Lewis has played excellent at times and French had a significant time off the field. Nsemba probably the outstanding performer for me given his youth and quite rightly won that. As for Peters, it’s a bit of a 50/50 decision for me. KR win or lose have probably made that next step progress, whereas my team have been incredibly consistent and good. Not bitter and I don’t think Matty will be too. Awards don’t mean too much unless the team delivers.

As Dave alludes to above, the awards don’t mean too much, what matters is the Grand Final on Saturday night. And what a brilliant one it should be.

he and his coach were a shoe in the way thier season, and last season has gone. But I have to say this, and have said it many times. this season has been especially poor over all for SL and last season wasn’t great. would this KR team be in the same position if they were playing 3/4 seasons ago? I think at best they would have finished 4th

Yer 3 or 4 years ago we wouldn’t have done this well which just goes to show how much Å´illie Peters has turned this HKR team in to a top Super league team that can challenge the best of them, we’ll done to all at Hull Kingston Rovers

Possibly spend £2.4 million instead of £3.1 million. I doubt that Peet’s bothered, he’s bought the trophies Wigan have won anyway. It’s such a farce; it’s more like football every day.

Can I just say straight off…coach of the year should of been between peet and my man Sam burgess who’s first season here pushed us all the way to a semi final in his first season no mention?? Why you ask? Cos he speaks his mind on the rules!! Also why wasn’t dufty or Ashton mentioned? Wow it shows the game is corrupt right to the top..absolutely shamefull

Wigan and KR separated by a yellow card in their head to head. Both been consistent and entertaining all season. Lewis has stepped up so much this season. Manager of the year had to be between 1&2 and as 1 card separated them it’s always gonna be a touch choice.

Two yellow cards. 13 v 13 Hull KR were comfortably ahead. Those yellow cards cost Hull KR the League Leaders Shield.

Some Rugby League fans “disagree”, it’s mostly from Wigan fans or the Lancashire corridor. Nobody can deny Mikey Lewis the Man of Steel award. As for saying Willie Peters shouldn’t be coach of the year, it’s sour grapes again from the pie eaters, Peet’s took over a club that was already a success whilst Peter’s took over a club that hadn’t got past the semis final of the grand final. A big improvement – that’s what coaching is about.
