Marc Sneyd has been a hot topic of late in rugby league circles thanks to the financial issues at his current club, Salford Red Devils, and the interest he is receiving from former employers, Hull FC.
It’s safe to say that Salford’s financial problems have been one of the biggest topics of the last month as the Red Devils try and navigate some choppy waters ahead of the 2025 Super League campaign. Salford are said to have been forced into a ‘fire sale’ of players amid money troubles which led to them asking for an advance on their league payments.
We have gone from an emergency which revealed they had asked for a £500,000 central funding advancement, transfer enquiries for players, investment group news, news the club had been told to cut costs by £700,000, FC links with Dean Cross and Sneyd, Jack Ormondroyd to Castleford Tigers links and news that clubs had been told salary cap dispensations will not be made to help Salford exits. Though, this might still actually happen.
We are now in a situation where ‘Hull FC are drifting from the pursuit to land Salford Red Devils star Marc Sneyd’, this is according to Love Rugby League. LRL reported that ‘while Hull have not completely stepped back away from the race to land Sneyd’s signature, there is an understanding the chances of a remarkable deal are diminishing’.
Leigh Leopards are now said to be the favourites because of what we all knew since the start of this saga, that Sneyd would like to remain closer to his family home, the whole reason he left the Black and Whites to re-join Salford in the first place in 2021.
What rugby league fans are saying about Marc Sneyd and Salford
This news has led to reaction aplenty from rugby league fans across the spectrum. Here is the best of it below:
@Wyvillian: As combinations go, Sezer and Cust has more potential than Sezer and Sneyd. Plus, I’m not sure the whole ‘returning player’ thing often ends up a success. I’d rather go with what we have, supported by our kids, whilst bringing Cross and another prop in. Half Back next year.
@algradHFC: Leigh is a more likely destination for the very same reason he moved in the first place. He was a great servant to Hull and where I would welcome him back I’m not convinced that it’s a great move in the bigger scheme of things for both player and club if he did return.
Richard Harvey: Shame but it’s why he left so makes complete sense.
Tom Kay: Would’ve been nice to have him back but can see why Leigh are more attractive. Still, he played his best rugby in a black and white shirt. Wish him nothing but the best. Quality player and still the best kicker in Super League.
Karl Giles: I personally wouldn’t have him at Leigh he’s too old. Yes he can kick a ball but that’s about it.
Chris Woods: Nah he was using Hull “negotiations” to push up his Leigh money more likely.
Declan Stanford: Good, top legend but for me as a Hull FC fan he’s too old. Get someone younger.
Dennis Welch: Good choice. FC fans would soon be on his back. Again.
Meanwhile, Hull Live have reported that the decision to not allow salary cap dispensation on Salford signings has actually put FC in a strong position to be able to pull off a deal for players of the Red Devils. This is due to the fact that Hull have cap space while other Super League rivals are at the cap. But there is a chance this dispensation stance could change in the coming days.
