Rugby League fans debate Super League’s Coach of the Year as strong front-runner emerges

The Super League Coach of the Year award is set to be awarded at the end of September, and rugby league fans have been offering their view as to who should pick up the title.

Hull KR boss Willie Peters has held the award for the past two seasons, having won the treble last season and taking the Robins to their first-ever Grand Final the year prior. Wigan boss Matt Peet can call himself very unlucky to not win it in 2024, having also led the Warriors to the treble.

It was Adrian Lam’s title in 2023, after guiding Leigh to the play-offs in their first year back in Super League, whilst Peet won it in 2022 after winning the Challenge Cup.

Peet is a strong contender for this year’s award as well, but as with most years, there is always one coach who gets plenty of calls to take title, despite not finishing at the top.

This year, Toulouse boss Sylvain Houles is the one who has been tipped to win the award, after guiding the French side to eighth in Super League in their first season back.

Not only that, the club have also had to do it on less funding than every other team, as well as needing to pay for teams’ travel when playing in France.

Other shouts are for Leeds Rhinos boss Brad Arthur, who would be the first Leeds boss to win the award since Brian McDermott in 2015, and the aforementioned Peet.

Rugby League fans will always have different opinions, but after Serious About Rugby League posed the question on Facebook and Instagram, it was the Olympique boss with the majority of votes.

Tony Jump: Brad Arthur (Saints fan) turned Leeds into title contenders

Maureen Dixon: Would be nice to reward improvement (Toulouse) rather than who finishes top!

Keith Butler: When you look at the resources available to these coaches, financially & squad depth, you can only come to one conclusion…..Sylvain Houles.

Danny Wise: Brad Arthur. If you think about where Leeds were when he took over and where they are now, he deserves it. Credit to the other candidates, but the Leeds job comes with a massive pressure that perhaps some other head coach positions in SL don’t.

Julie Widdowson: Slyvain Houles on reduced budget

Tom Bamford: Sylvain Houles for me. But probably go to Brad Arthur if we win silverware

John Derbyshire: Without being biased, it’s got to be either Matty Peet or Brad Arthur. I know people consider other metrics but you can’t avoid straight forward success.

Dave Carter: I’m a Knights fan, in my opinion it’s Sylvain Houles.

Linda Pownall: Sylvain Houles. He has done fantastically well with his team coming into SL and only had half the funding of the other top teams.

David Law: Peet for me. I think they will win the treble.

James Tither: Matty Peet all day. And he’ll go all the way. There’s no team that will stop the Warriors.

Poppy Riley: As a Leopards fan, Brad Arthur he’s been nothing short of brilliant

Chris Waywell: Matty Peet hands down (wire)
