Rugby League fans debate Challenge Cup winner but surprise dark horse emerges

Challenge Cup semi-finals

The Challenge Cup quarter-finals get underway tonight, meaning we’re just two games from Wembley and rugby league fans have had their say on who will will lift the trophy under the famous arches.

Just eight teams remain and perhaps most significant is the fact that holders Wigan Warriors have already been knocked out of the competition, falling to Hull FC as they surrendered a 22-6 lead.

That incredible Hull FC win split the competition wide open and also earned the Black and Whites a home tie against their nearest and dearest rivals, Hull KR.

The pair meet on Saturday in a game breaking all sorts of records including the first meeting in the competition for 39 years, the highest crowd for a quarter-final in 36 years, the highest crowd for a game outside of the final since 2008, and Hull FC’s highest home crowd in the competition since 1961.

Whilst that game has understandably caught the eye, it’s meant that three other very intriguing games have gone under the radar, starting with Salford’s trip to take on Catalans. Wakefield also host Leigh whilst St Helens travel to Warrington on Sunday, with the semi-final draw made at half-time of that game.

With just eight teams remaining, we asked rugby league fans who they thought would be lifting the trophy at Wembley on the 11th of June.

Rugby League fans debate Challenge Cup winner but surprise dark horse emerges

Posting on the Serious About Rugby League Facebook page, we asked: “Which team will lift the 2025 Challenge Cup trophy?”, with that question sparking plenty of debate among fans.

Judy Coutinho: “I think it will be Hull KR… they are totally on form right now.”

Paul Hugh McGuigan: “In terms of form and paper it will be Hull KR but rugby is not played on paper.”

Elaine Farrell: “If not Saints then Hull KR but COYS.”

Ben Jackson: “I think a Leigh vs KR final and KR will win it but I’d love to see the likes of Trinity in the final.”

Tommy Edwards: “I’d like to see Wakefield win it. A couple of years ago I’d of said KR but their fans are becoming like Warringtons fans. They are acting as though they are above other clubs that have won as much as them (nothing). They also haven’t had their financial resolve tested as yet with offers for their key players.”

Andrew Lambert: “Like to see a different name on it. Wakefield would be nice to see. They have really turned things around since getting relegated, on and off the field.”

Tony Mcroberts: “After everything they’re going through I’d love to see Salford lift the cup but realistically I think Wakefield could be the dark horses.”

Michele Prince: “This goes against everything I believe in but I’m saying Wakefield.”
