Rugby league fans create petition demanding overhaul of disciplinary system

It’s fair to say that rugby league has been focused on one issue and one issue only this week, despite there being a Grand Final to play tomorrow.

That focal point is, of course, the ban, appeal and subsequent second appeal that eventually saw St Helens star Morgan Knowles be allowed to play in the Super League Grand Final tomorrow against Leeds Rhinos.

Knowles was banned by the Match Review Panel on Monday following a Grade B Dangerous Contact charge after an alleged chicken wing on Salford Red Devils man Chris Atkin.

Saints appealed on Tuesday, but that failed and the original ban was upheld.

However, Saints appealed again on Wednesday which yielded an overturn of the original ban, allowing Knowles to play this weekend.

One rugby league fan had already created a petition in July calling for urgent change in the disciplinary system, but signatures have continued to flow in in the past week following the Knowles decision.

The petition states: “We, the undersigned, demand action to immediately and urgently review the Rugby Leagues disciplinary panel due to its inconsistent nature. The detrimental effect that this is having to a despairing supporter base is endangering the very nature of the game and is endangering delivering a mortal blow to an already diminished audience.”

The petition can be viewed here.

Time for a complete overhaul of the disciplinary panel it has become a farce rugby league is a physical game unless a player is shown a red card then let sin binning be the only punishment served out.
