Rugby League fans agree as Captain’s Challenge debate sparked following Super League coach’s comments

Following the comments of Wakefield Trinity boss Daryl Powell on the Captain’s Challenge rule, rugby league fans have had their say on whether it should stay or go.

Since it’s inception at the beginning of 2025, the Captain’s Challenge has been controversial to say the least, with this year especially highlighting it’s flaws.

In Powell’s comments after their win over Hull KR, he called for the rule to be scrapped due to the negative effects it is having on the game.

“You’ve got to get rid of captain’s challenge, straight off the bat,” he said. “If you have an inconclusive, it just doesn’t work. It just doesn’t work. I don’t see it

“You’ve got to change it, somehow. Either get rid of it or change it. An inconclusive then adds another one on, and our game is not that, it’s not that.”

He later claimed: “Everybody is saying it, for the good of the game we have to do something. I’d do it now, if I’m honest, I think it’s that important.

“Every single game, every single coach is talking about this, so something needs to change. It’s crazy.”

“…It’s not a good look for the sport, everybody’s saying it. If it doesn’t happen now, then it has to happen for next season.”

Those comments have led to fans having their say, and many are in agreement with the Wakefield Trinity boss.

Jonny Ashton: It’s a great rule but it needs a cap along with the video ref. If nothing is evident in the first 2/3 looks, the original decision should stand

Si Ledge: Yes agree it slows the game up. let the referee referee the game

Julie Wild: Totally agree with Powell. Captains challenge undermines the referee. The refs have a hard enough job ~ let’s accept & respect them. Without the referees there’s no game .

Karl Dawson: Yes, it was used yesterday clearly to slow the game down with minutes to go, and also slows the game down as the video ref takes an age to have a look at so many different angles

Lee Morris: Be quicker that’s all, ref makes a decision, sends it up and you have 1 minute to see if anything is clear and obvious.
