Rugby League can be such a wild sport on the field and sometimes, even off the field it can get pretty out there.
The latest story from the NRL is up there with the most bizarre things you’ll hear about happening at a rugby league game, and it’s left fans up in arms to say the least.
A man who has been alleged of throwing a meat pie at rival fans during an NRL match is now facing a potential life ban, with supporters angry about a perceived ‘double standard’.
The St George Illawarra fan was filmed allegedly throwing the pie into the crowd during the Dragons clash vs Canterbury Bulldogs on Saturday. The clip has since gone viral on social media.
NSW Police have charged the man and it’s said the NRL have issued him with a ‘notice of intention to ban’. Such a punishment would result in him not being able to attend matches.
DailyMail Australia reported: “A man is due to face court next month after allegedly throwing a pie during a football match at a stadium on March 8. Police officers patrolling the stadium were alerted to the incident on the eastern side of the general seating area. No injuries were reported, however the pie is believed to have struck several people.”
The aforementioned ‘double standard’ part of the story comes from fans’ belief that such a life ban for throwing a pie doesn’t compute with the relatively minor suspension that Brisbane Broncos player Ezra Mam received for a drug-related car incident last year.
Mam had cocaine in his system, was driving without a licence, injured an Uber driver, a female passenger, and a young girl broke her hip. By comparison, he is banned until round 10.
During the aforementioned pie-throwing clip, two fans are seen buying a pie inside the ground and saying ‘would that look good on a Bulldogs supporter?’
The clip then allegedly shows the pie being thrown at a group of Canterbury fans.
